RESPONSE TO THE ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA ARTICLE PURPORTED TO BE A STATEMENT MADE BY GAMBIA’S HEAD OF STATE!
A recent story been peddled that a candidate of a political party is claiming that the ex-president,
Jammeh, should be stopped from expressing his ENDORSEMENT for Mama Kandeh or EXPRESSING his support for a candidate or a party.
LET IT CLEAR,
ex-president Jammeh, as a citizen, has rights:
1. Right to vote as a citizen
2. Right to freedom of Expression under the constitution
3. Right as a citizen to choose a political party he desires as stated under S104 of the electoral Decree 1996 of Decree No. 78.
In fact NOTHING IS WRONG for an ex-president, ex-ministers or former public figures giving their endorsement to a presidential candidate- a democratic practice.
Such actions are not "Corrupt practices or Bribery voters as respectively stated in Section 116 and 117 of the electoral Decree. We all saw evidence of bribery by some politicians especially some desperate party officials that was circulating on social media but not reported by our mainstream media houses.
Again voters have a choice to listen or ignore messages from any commentator, news media or public figures such as ex-presidents. Any citizen can choose to be a fan or follower of any public figures: a musician or famous footballers, an ex-president or ex-minister.
It is not an offence to listen to an opinion or a piece of advice from any person. Instead it is a constitutional right under Section 25 of the Gambian constitution. Remember all citizens including jammeh have:
1. Right to register and vote despite being in the Diapora
2. Right to participate in elections as a citizen
3. Right to freedom of expression.
Again REMEMBER when some political parties previously mentioned his return and also visited his home town to seek his ENDORSEMENT.
“Where were the complainants that time?".
The ex-president refused to endorse the desperate candidate who went to Kanilai in the name of ‘reconciliation’.
Now they going berserk because Jammeh endorsed Mama Kandeh instead.
Finally, there is no offence in listening to a jammeh audio or telephone messages -recorded or live. Anyone is at liberty to ignore or consume it.
Unless he renounced his citizenship, he is at liberty to express an opinion to his fans or followers.
Please! Let's respect the constitutional rights of citizens including President Jammeh.
