Massmart workers affiliated to the South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers (SACCAWU) This morning embarked on a week-long strike.
The strike will affect Massmart-owed stores, including Makro, Game, Builders Warehouse, Cambridge and Jumbo.
Unions are demanding a ten percent salary increase for workers at Builders Warehouse.
They want dismissed Game employees to be reinstated and are demanding better car and mobile phone allowances for 170 Makro customer relationship officers.
Saccawu says the strike will cost their members up to 25 percent of their November wages.
Massmart owns 411 stores in 13 sub-Saharan countries.
