Monday 7AM tropical update: Fred could be hurricane; 2 more to watch

Fred could become a hurricane before landfall near Panama City, while Grace is struggling and TD 8 is in the Atlantic.

As of Monday morning Tropical Storm Fred continues to get stronger. A landfall looks likely Monday evening along the western Florida Panhandle somewhere near Panama City.

Strengthening is expected as it moves over the warm Gulf waters, but the storm is also facing some dry air and wind shear. Right now the official forecast calls for a strong tropical storm at landfall, but it could be a bit stronger.

Tropical Depression Grace
Grace was still weak and unorganized Monday morning and is being classified as a tropical depression.

Grace will likely remain weak as a depression Monday, but it is now expected to stay south of the Hispaniola. That means the mountains won't disrupt the system.

The forecast now keeps it moving west south of Cuba by Tuesday and Wednesday and strengthen if it stays over the water. High pressure building over the northern Gulf of Mexico will steer Grace due west with very little movement north expected. Whenever high pressure like this develops over the Gulf of Mexico it's difficult for the storm to turn north. The track takes it into Mexico or extreme south Texas by this weekend.
