Sky News can reveal the federal government is considering “left-field” short-term options to bring in skilled migrant workers into the country despite the caps on international arrivals commencing on Wednesday.
It is understood the Department of Home Affairs has been looking into utilising a 250-person facility on Christmas Island for quarantine which could be operation as early as January 2022.
Meanwhile, the use of cruise ships for quarantine has also been touted as a possible option with the industry ground to a half as a result of the current pandemic.
The Commonwealth will also consider expanding existing state and federal quarantine sites with the new quarantine site at Mickleham and the Howard Springs facility also potential options for the scheme.
