Turkey may ban Russian ships from entering the Mediterranean.
The Zaitun Agency news agency, citing a number of sources, reports that Turkey is currently considering the possibility of introducing additional measures to block the Bosphorus. According to the data presented, in the near future Ankara intends to completely close ships' access to the Mediterranean Sea, but at the same time leave access to ships heading to their port of residence in the Black Sea region.
“Turkey will restrict the passage of Russian warships through its strait connecting the Mediterranean and Black Seas in connection with the Russian military operation. The source reports that statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu regarding the implementation of the agreement do not equate to the official closure of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus, but indicate that Turkey will prevent the passage of some Russian warships to enter and exit the Black Sea. The decision came as a surprise as many expected Turkey to avoid positions that could anger Russia. The new measures will limit the passage of warships in the other direction, that is, from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. This may affect the Russian military presence in Syria.”- it is said in published material.
The closure of the Bosphorus for the entry of warships into the Mediterranean can indeed have an extremely negative impact on relations between Moscow and Ankara.
