Two Olive Ridleys get a Second Lease of life.

TREE Foundation has been involved in ‘Community based Marine Ecosystem and Endangered Species conservation’ since 2002. TREE Foundation works with 363 Sea Turtle Protection Force members from 222 fishing communities along Chennai, Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh And southern Odisha.

Specialized awareness programs for 20,000 artisanal fishermen for releasing endangered marine species entangled in ghost nets and fishing gear are being conducted regularly to fishing communities along Chennai and Kancheepuram Chengalpattu coasts.

On 9th January 2022, morning around 7: 30 AM ,from Thazhuthalikkupam fishing village south of Kalpakkam while fishing 06 Nautical miles from the shore, found an entangled female Olive Ridley Turtle in their fishing line set for Kadama valai (squid). They immediately pulled the fishing line close to the boat and safely released the Turtle who was happy to swim away and back to freedom once again .
In 2002 in the initial years of our conservation program, the fishermen who encountered turtles entangled in their fishing nets would just hit it on the head or chop off the turtles flippers and then retrieve their nets. This would ensure that the turtle would not get entangled in any other fisherman's net.
One more olive ridleys were released off from Paramenkeni Kuppam Fishing village south of Kalpakkam while fishing 06 Nautical miles from the shore, found an entangled female Olive Ridley Turtle in their fishing net set for Kadama valai (squid).
20 years of intense and regular awareness programs to the fishing community have shown their results. We thank HCL Foundation for the Ghost net incentivisation program.
TREE Foundation works jointly with the Forest Department, Fisheries Department, Coastal Security Group and The Indian Coast Guard.
