1. Fish oil is thought to be so beneficial for protecting the heart because it's rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids. They are called essential because our body can’t make them, instead we must get them from our diet.

2. The standard American diet provides a lot more omega 6 than omega 3. This is said to be a big cause of inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease. And it's widely believed that omega 3 is anti-inflammatory and can help prevent chronic diseases associated with inflammation.

3. Omega 3 in the form of fish oil is believed to be preferable to plant based omega 3, because it contains two-key omega-3 fatty acids; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). If we eat plant based omega 3’s we don’t get DHA and EPA. Instead our body must convert the fatty acids from plants, which is called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into DHA and EPA.

4. For years scientists have believed that our body is inefficient at converting ALA from plant based omegas to EPA and DHA. But some researcher are now arguing that when we consume omega 3 from plants our body is more than capable of making the small amount of EPA and DHA that it needs. When we take fish oil that contains high amounts of EPA and DHA we could actually be getting way more than our body needs.

6. Another issue is the process of oil extraction, which involves exposure to light and heat. Both of which fish oil is highly sensitive to and causes it to go rancid as it isn't stable at higher temperatures.

7. A review by The Cochrane Institute which is internationally recognized as the gold standard for high-quality independent medical information looked at all the studies on fish oil and concluded that
“not only do these things not work, but they’re in fact oxidative.”

8. Oxidation is a problem because when a cell becomes oxidized it can no longer work properly and dysfunction starts to occur. This can be in the form of chronic diseases, such as; cancers, alzheimer, and heart disease.

9. It's important to understand that fatty acids from omega 3 and 6 make up a large percentage of our cell membranes. If they are rancid or out of balance this can cause problems. Consuming large amounts of omega 3s that are damaged may affect the cell and if we don’t get the correct ratio of omega 3 to 6 this can cause more issues.

10. Some researchers and doctors are saying fish oil can lead to omega 3 dominance and can create an imbalance. As it does not replicate the ratio found in nature which is normally 1:1, and in some cases it is as high as 1:5 or 1:6 of omega 6 to omega 3.

11. If we fail to get the right balance of fats over the long term it can have a negative impact as it destabilizes the mitochondrial membrane. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of all our cells. If there's too much omega 3 it kicks out a fat called cardiolipin that helps the cells create energy.
Without enough energy the function of the cell can be severely compromised leading to poor health.

12. It is also vital to understand the role omega 6 plays. What’s important to understand is that omega 6 only causes this inflammatory response when it is rancid. Omega 6 actually plays a critical role because it contains linoleic acid. This is vital for health as it makes up 33% of your cell membranes and 40% of your mitochondrial membranes. Ensuring you have plenty of energy and nutrients are getting into the cell.

13. Another point to consider is that certain fish contain metals and pollutant. These harmful substances are stored in the fat of the fish. Thus fish oil could be the part highest in chemicals and heavy metals.

14. What’s critical to understand is that foods in their natural, unprocessed form, serve the body wonderfully.Eating the whole fish, rather than just the oil, provides protective qualities. When you eat a fish you get all the other nutrients that nature designed to be eaten with the naturally occurring oils.
