‘Critical labour shortage’ is leading to skyrocketing hospitality wages

There is a “critical labour shortage” in Australia’s hospitality industry, according to Restaurant and Catering Australia’s CEO Wes Lambert.

“There are many reasons why it’s critical; certainly it’s something that needs to be dealt with on a better level,” Mr Lambert told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

Mr Lambert said nearly 40 per cent of all advertised jobs on SEEK are hospitality jobs, with businesses across the country struggling to fill positions.

“In the long-term, we need more Australians to get into traineeships and apprenticeships in hospitality; certainly, the wages in the industry are skyrocketing because of the shortage.

“We’re hearing of some businesses paying into the $40 an hour for positions that are normally in the 20s and sign on bonuses.”
