Belarus-Poland border migrants injured attempting crossings & shots fired

Footage released on Wednesday by the Belarusian State Border Committee shows footage of injured migrants at the camp on the Belarus-Poland border.

The footage shows shocking scenes of injured people sitting near the campfire in sub-zero temperatures and people lying inside tents with blood on them.

Hundreds have set up camp along the border, where razor wire fences and Polish soldiers have repeatedly blocked their entry into the European Union.

Poland and other EU states accuse Belarus of encouraging the migrants - from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa - to illegally cross the frontier in revenge for sanctions slapped on Minsk over human rights abuses.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's government, which is backed by Russia, denies engineering the migrant crisis and blames Europe and the United States for the plight of the people stranded at the border.

On Tuesday Poland reinforced its border with more riot police, a day after groups of migrants tried to storm through a razor-wire fence.

The migrants are mostly from Iraq and Syria, though some have come from Africa.

It comes as German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone that Belarus's "instrumentalisation of migrants" was inhumane and unacceptable and asked him to press Belarus's government on the matter, her spokesperson said.
