The United Nation’s weather agency the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on October 5, 2021, that water-related hazards such as droughts and floods will increase due to climate change. According to its report published in August, floods and droughts have killed 58,700 and 650,000 people worldwide respectively over the past 50 years. With inadequate global water resource management in place, the number of people living with water stress is expected to soar from worsening water shortages and growing population. More than five billion people are expected to face inadequate access to water at least one month per year by 2050. WMO urged governments to increase funding and cooperation to set up emergency warning systems to ward off a looming crisis.
