On the Water House, designed by a famous Japanese architectural studio Nikken Sekkei, is situated at the banks and above the lake in Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo. Connection with nature was a very important criterion for this design since the main function of the building is a guesthouse. The rooms and communication in the interior develop in a spiral path that opens different views from the many spaces overlooking the lake. Architecture is simplistic with horizontal concrete slabs, strong and heavy in appearance, with layers of empty space where people reside. This is a great example of how strong and heavy concrete can have a levitating impression.
The architecture of the interior is defined by sloped ceilings since it conveys the geometry of the spiral path. Both in the interior and in exterior the building is a showcase for lack of decoration and details.
The connection between this contemporary architectural piece and the lake and nature is unprecedented. So this is a great example of how to built and how to design architecture that is leaning on nature and how to build with concrete as a predominant construction material.
