Income Tax Return Filing Deadline extended / Sumit, Avani win gold as India win 5 medals on Day 7

What comes as a big relief to taxpayers in India, the Finance Ministry had announced that it would be extending the deadlines for e-filings of various income tax returns (ITR) forms that come under the ambit of the Income-Tax Act, 1961. This comes after taxpayers had reported difficulties in the filing of these forms online. The government had previously extended the deadlines for filing income tax returns (ITR) earlier this year so as to give taxpayers some form of relief amidst the ongoing pandemic. In July, the deadline for filing ITR was extended till September 30, for FY21. Even the year preceding that, the government had given several extensions on the grounds of Covid-19 relief. The recent extensions come on the back of several taxpayers taking to social media to express the issues that they faced trying to file the e-forms on the official Income Tax portal. In early June, the Income Tax Department had rolled out a new tax e-filing portal to streamline the online application process. It had several features such as pre-filled ITR forms and quick refunds; however, it also came with several glitches and technical issues. One of the major issues so far has been the lags on the portal as well as some of the reports being full of errors. Since August 21, the portal was said to be inaccessible by the IT Department. In light of this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman got involved. Sitharaman met Salil Parekh, the managing director and CEO of Infosys, regarding the issues, on August 23. As the repairs and updates were being planned out, the government had to allow the manual filing of remittance forms as well as extend the due dates for e-filing of forms related to intimation of pension funds and sovereign wealth funds.

It was a golden day for India at the Paralympics as they produced as many as 5 medals for the country, including two golds courtesy Avani and Sumit. Shooter Avani Lekhara scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, firing her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. Debutant Sumit smashed his own world record multiple times for the F64 class gold, while veteran Devendra Jhajharia's F46 category silver cemented his status of being India's greatest para-athlete as javelin throwers led the country's track-and-field medal rush at the Paralympics on Monday. Another javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar picked up bronze in Jhajharia's event, while discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya's F56 silver ensured that India made its presence felt across the podium and through the day.
