(26 Jul 2021) China on Monday called on the UK to provide an "open, fair and non-discriminatory" environment for Chinese companies, after the UK reportedly considered blocking a Chinese company's participation in the country's power projects.
The British government was "exploring ways" to block state-owned China General Nuclear (CGN) from future power projects in the UK, according to a report in the British newspaper Financial Times on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The move could remove CGN from the consortium proposal of building Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, as well as a new project in Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex, said the report.
It would also add to fraying ties between Britain and China, already strained by U.K. efforts to address human rights abuses against the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang and widen residency rights for people from Hong Kong.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Zhao Lijian said that China and the UK are "important trade and investment partners" and it would be in the interest of both countries to have a "win-win" cooperation.
