Joe Biden held a Town Hall event moderated by Don Lemon on @CNN last night. Key issues at hand were the infrastructure bill that Democrats are trying to pass, Biden's support of a talking filibuster, voting rights, and the viability of bipartisan cooperation. Lemon asks Biden how much of a priority voting rights are to him, and Biden says that he thinks the current voting rights bills in play will pass both the House and Senate via bipartisan agreement. Emma Vigeland: Let's turn to Joe Biden. Joe Biden did a Town Hall with CNN last night, trying to sell the infrastructure package on a national stage. It was with Don Lemon, so that's... a choice. Biden came out in favor of a talking filibuster last night, which is good news, because shifting the filibuster to a talking filibuster would eliminate a lot of the problems that we're seeing in terms of Republican obstruction. That is the good news. The bad news is that he continued to echo childlike notions of Republican reasonability, even though he's been alive for quite a while. Usually, you're supposed to get wiser as you get older, but not in Biden's case. He's clinging to literal fairy tales about how voting rights legislation will get passed. Let's take a listen to his full answer to Don Lemon last night.
Joe Biden: I would go back to that where you have to maintain the floor. You have to stand there and talk and hold the floor. You can't just say...
Don Lemon: I understand that, but what difference is that if you hold the floor for you know a day, or a year, what difference does it make? Here's the thing for me: You talked about people — and this is important for people who look like me. My grandmother would sit around, when I was a kid — fifth grade, she had a fifth grade education — I learned that she couldn't read when when I was doing my homework. She would tell me stories about people asking her to count the number of jellybeans in the jar, yeah the soap. And so why is protecting the filibuster... Is that more important than protecting voting rights, especially for people who fought and died for that?
Joe Biden: No, it's not. I want to see the united states congress the united states senate pass s1 and s4 that john lewis i get on my desk so i can sign them but here's the deal but i also want to do i want to make sure we bring along not just all the democrats we bring along republicans why no know better they know better than this and what i don't want to do is get wrapped up right now in the argument whether or not this is all about the filibuster or look the american public you can't stop them from voting you tried last time more people voted last time than any time in american history in the middle of the worst pandemic in american history more people did and they showed up they're going to show up again they're going to do it again but what i want to do is i'm trying to bring the country together and i don't want the debate to only be about whether or not we have a filibuster or exceptions of the filibuster or that going back to the way the filibuster had to be used before this isn't that the only way you're going to get it done right now no i don't believe that i think we can get it done if you if you um based on what evidence based on what evidence do you think that you're going to be able to get it done with republican votes because as i said at the beginning of the show they are despite long negotiations about this bipartisan infrastructure package which most of the money comes from unused money anyway they're already blocking debate on that and that hangs in the balance let alone a voting rights bill that would curb these statewide efforts to suppress the vote and make them more successful electorally because one party chooses to through means that are completely unethical and cruel and racist uh to make sure that they win elections and the other party is like i don't know if i'm that interested in that which is why joe biden is the president and why biden is the leader of that party i i mean like the idea that republicans know better and that he thinks he can bring republicans along you know he has no evidence for that
