To start off with the answer, before diving into all the details… Yes, you can build muscle and lose fat at the same time.

You do not have to do one or the other. This is called recomposition, staying around the same weight, but you are recomping your body. What people would typically do is focus on losing fat first by cutting caloric intake then moving to trying to build a couple pounds in muscle. You don’t need to do that because that is strenuous on your body. Why do that, when you can build muscle and lose fat at the same time.

If you have a higher body fat percentage, around 25-30% then you should prioritize fat loss. Now, let’s get started with the tips on how to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Everyone has their own unique goals, so make sure to do what is best for your goals and where you are starting.

Tip #1: CALORIES AND NUTRITION. A good way to lose fat while being at a caloric surplus to build muscle is to utilize carb-cycling. On the days that you are working out, you can have complex carbs. On the days that you are not working out and doing resistance training, you want to avoid complex carbs like rice, potatoes, and breads. Eating complex carbs on the days that you are working out, will help fuel your workouts.

TIP #2: WORKOUTS. Make sure that you are doing resistance training at least 4-5 times a week, especially if your goal is to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Utilize compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, and presses. These are more bang for your buck exercises that will have multiple benefits to help you build muscle and burn fat at the same time.

Tip #3: REST/RECOVERY/SLEEP. It can be easy to push yourself everyday when you are trying to reach a certain goal. However, your body needs time to rest and recover from your workouts in order to build muscle and burn fat. I recommend that you try and get 7-9 hours of sleep a night, specifically REM sleep.
